Dr. Amin Malek — an associate professor in California State University, Bakersfield’s Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science — was recently chosen to receive an award from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).
Dr. Malek is being recognized as the organization’s 2025 Outstanding Campus Representative for its Pacific Southwest section. He was chosen for his work as a liaison between ASEE and CSUB’s engineering students, faculty and staff.
“I was very surprised; I was truly honored and grateful to be chosen for this award,” he said. “It's a wonderful recognition of my work and definitely motivates me to continue striving for excellence.”
As the ASEE campus representative for CSUB, Dr. Malek ensures those in the university’s engineering programs have everything they need to succeed. This has included serving as the advisor for CSUB’s Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Club and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers student branch. Through these groups, Dr. Malek has brought in guest lecturers, organized competitions and helped students with their Fundamentals of Engineering exam, an important step in becoming a licensed professional engineer.
Dr. Malek, who first came to CSUB in 2020, also encourages his colleagues and students to become members of ASEE to have access to its libraries and resources.
One of the accomplishments Dr. Malek is most proud of is bringing an Amazon web services certification course to CSUB. With that partnership, students have access to all the resources and materials necessary for the course and they can earn their certification, something that would normally cost a few thousand dollars. The course is offered every year, with more than 150 students already completing it over the last two years. The credential will make students more competitive when they enter the workforce.
“I am committed to expanding the range of activities available to our students,” Dr. Malek said. “Given that enrolling in additional courses outside the university can be costly, often requiring thousands of dollars, I am leveraging my professional network to bring these opportunities to CSUB at no cost to our students, ensuring they have access to valuable learning experiences without financial barriers."
These activities were ways that Dr. Malek was already supporting CSUB engineering students, making him a perfect fit to assume the role in January 2024, when he was appointed by Dr. Jane Dong, dean of CSUB’s College of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering.
“I really want to give a special thanks to Dr. Dong for her support and encouragement,” Dr. Malek said. “She always helps faculty and staff to grow, and I truly appreciate her guidance and the impact that she has had on my journey.”
Dr. Malek will officially receive the award at the ASEE-Pacific Southwest Conference at Cal Poly Pomona in April. He was previously selected for CSUB’s Outstanding Advisor Award for Mentorship Excellence for the 2023-2024 academic year.
