The California State University has announced today that all students, faculty and staff returning to campus for the fall 2021 semester will be required to show proof that they have been vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. The requirement is conditioned upon full approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of one or more vaccines, as well as adequate availability of the approved vaccines
The CSU joined the University of California in arriving at the decision, intended to protect the health and safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors on campus.
“Together, the CSU and UC enroll and employ more than one million students and employees across 33 major university campuses, so this is the most comprehensive and consequential university plan for COVID-19 vaccines in the country,” said CSU Chancellor Joseph I. Castro.
The CSU is making the announcement now for two reasons:
• Full transparency is the obligation of our public university system, and a guiding principle at CSUB.
• We want to give students, faculty and staff ample time to become vaccinated.
The policy and plan for implementation are still under development, and the Chancellor’s Office has announced it will confer with the California State Student Association, the CSU Academic Senate and labor unions. The vaccination requirement would allow for students or employees to seek an exemption based on medical or religious grounds, and further grounds for exemption are being considered.
We know you have many questions. As we learn more from the CSU, we will share that information with you. As always, we welcome your voices and input and have scheduled a CSUB Campus Forum on Repopulation for May 12, from 1 to 2 p.m.
If you have not received your vaccination yet, please visit MyTurn.ca.gov to make your appointment at the CSUB Mass Vaccination Hub, which is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. The vaccines are free, and health insurance is not required. Everyone 16 and over – regardless of immigration status or any other factor – may receive the vaccine.
Walk-ins also are welcome at the CSUB Mass Vaccination Hub, and we are working with community partners on mobile solutions to take the vaccines throughout Kern County, where our friends and neighbors live and work.
Today’s decision by the Chancellor’s Office is the first step in restoring our campus community and returning to the full collegiate experience that our students deserve.
