It’s the time of year when things get spooky, and while some creatures might have earned their chilling reputation, Dr. Anna Doty wants everyone to know there’s nothing to fear when it comes to bats.
Dr. Doty, an assistant professor of biology at California State University, Bakersfield, will lead a talk on all things bats for this month’s Buena Vista Museum of Natural History & Science “Meet the Expert” series on Thursday, Oct. 21.
In the free and virtual event, titled “The Wonder of Bats: Understanding the Misunderstood,” ecophysiologist Dr. Doty will talk about the ways bats serve their ecosystems, through pollination, seed dispersal and crop pest control. Attendees will also learn how bats survive in harsh environmental conditions.
“People can expect to learn about the misconceptions associated with bats, basic bat biology, their important roles in our world and the threats they currently face,” Dr. Doty said. “This talk is suitable for a general audience! I want this to be an inclusive event that everyone can enjoy.”
When the Buena Vista Museum reached out to her about participating in the monthly “Meet the Expert” series, which has previously featured other CSUB scientists, Dr. Doty leapt at the chance to share her passion for bats and open some minds when it comes to the underappreciated beings.
“People should check out this event because they will learn about one of the world’s most misunderstood creatures,” she said. “In fact, one might even leave the event thinking bats are not only cool and important, but maybe even cute!”
