California State University, Bakersfield’s nursing program was recently recognized as one of the best nursing schools in California on two separate lists compiled by professionals in the field of nursing.
Nurse.org named CSUB’s nursing program in its list of “Top 10 Best Nursing Schools in California,” and Nursing Schools Almanac ranked the program #50 in its 2022 rankings of “The 100 Best Nursing Schools in California.”
“It is nice that the quality of our programs has been recognized on both of these lists,” said Dr. Debra Wilson, chair of CSUB’s nursing department. “Our graduates contribute significantly to the health care of our local community!”
Each list has its own criteria to rank nursing schools in the state.
Nurse.org, a news and education resource for nurses and by nurses, used a panel of five registered nurses to select top nursing schools in the state based on reputation, tuition, acceptance rate, accreditation and its students’ pass rate for the National Council Licensure Examination (or NCLEX).
Dr. Wilson is proud of her program’s high NCLEX pass rate, which at 98% makes it the second highest pass rate on Nurse.org’s list, a close runner-up to CSU Long Beach’s 99% pass rate. Though Nurse.org’s list does not specify rankings among its top 10, CSUB was also praised for its affordable cost and its options for nursing students, including a traditional bachelor’s degree in nursing and a 15-month program for registered nurses to earn their bachelor’s degree, as well as the school’s graduate family nurse practitioner program.
For their list, Nursing Schools Almanac’s team of researchers looked at three dimensions when evaluating nursing schools in the country: the institution’s academic prestige and perceived value; the breadth and depth of nursing programs offered; and student success, particularly on the NCLEX.
Like the Nurse.org list, the Nursing Schools Almanac ranking highlights the CSUB nursing department’s three programs and its high NCLEX pass rate. It praises the thousands of nurses and nurse practitioners who have graduated through the programs, noting that many remain in the Bakersfield and Kern County area to continue to serve their community.
“We are so proud of our amazing nursing program, which provides high quality education and professional training to develop students into health care professionals,” said Dr. Jane Dong, dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering, which includes the nursing department. “With dedicated faculty and hardworking students, it is not surprising that our nursing program has such a high NCLEX pass rate. I am excited that our nursing program will establish a doctoral degree to offer career advancement opportunities for health care professionals in Kern County.”
