California State University, Bakersfield participated in the CSU’s systemwide initiative of Super Sunday once again on Sunday, Feb. 28.
“The mission of Super Sunday is simple: to encourage more students of color to pursue a college education and the life of purpose, accomplishment and service to others that will be possible with your college degree,” said CSUB President Dr. Lynnette Zelezny.
This year, the event was held virtually. The following churches in our community participated in CSU Super Sunday 2021:
- CAIN Memorial AME, Pastor: Dr. Timothy Coston
- Compassion Christian Center, Pastor: Roland B. Banks
- Living Victory Church, Pastor: Dr. Dwayne Cantrell
- Pleasant View Church, Pastor: Tim Grays, Sr.
- Saint Peter Restoration Community Christian Ministries, Pastor: Dr. Oscar Anthony
- Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor: Antonio Alfred
For more than a decade, the CSU has partnered with faith-based leaders to host Super Sunday during the month of February. CSU leaders bring an empowering message to churches throughout California about the importance of preparing for college.
Various campus leaders spoke on the benefits of pursuing college and higher education, providing valuable information about college readiness, admissions, financial aid and more to interested students and parents.
Speakers who recorded messages for this year’s participating churches included:
- Dr. Lynnette Zelezny, president, CSUB;
- Dr. Vernon Harper, provost and vice president for academic affairs; and
- Dr. Thomas Wallace, vice president for student affairs
