California State University, Bakersfield’s dual enrollment partnership with the Delano Joint Union High School District (DJUHSD) has been recognized as being among the best in the state.
Delano and Robert F. Kennedy high schools received Exemplary Dual Enrollment awards from the California Department of Education as part of its California School Recognition Program ceremony held in Anaheim last month. The schools were two among nine that received awards.
“I am both honored and humbled to accept these two awards on behalf of CSUB. It is truly an honor and privilege to serve as the coordinator for dual enrollment on our campus, and these awards are a testimony to our team and our continued commitment to foster exemplary partnerships with our local high schools,” said Associate Dean of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies Dr. Denver Fowler.
CSUB has one of the largest dual enrollment programs in the CSU system, according to Dr. Fowler. In addition to DJUHSD, the university is partnering with the Kern High School District and the Chaffey Joint Union High School District in San Bernardino.
The program gives high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take college-credit courses and earn up to six units per semester. Courses are offered in subjects such as government, algebra, geology and French.
Paul Chavez, director of career technical education for the Delano schools, said the dual enrollment programs have been great assets for Delano students over the years.
“These partnerships provide great opportunities for our students to earn meaningful college credits that create seamless transitions to post-secondary education,” he said.
Delano High School Principal Shondra Walker said she was excited to learn that the school received its first-ever dual enrollment award. She hopes the program will receive more recognition in the future.
“We are grateful to CSUB for their partnership and look forward to continuing to work together to support the students in Delano,” she said.
