University Police Department
The University Police Department (UPD) is open 24 hours a day, year-round and is located east of the Science III Building, just next to the old gym.
All around campus are bright yellow poles with blue lights, which are emergency phones and will automatically dial to the UPD dispatch center. An information button can be found on these phones for non-emergency questions.
All on campus emergencies or crimes should be reported to UPD. Here are just a few reasons why:
- Average response time of less than two minutes.
- Officers are ‘real’ officers and can take all crime and traffic reports/investigations.
- Dispatch at UPD knows campus locations to best route fire and medical as needed.
Other services provided by UPD include:
- Safety Escorts – An officer or CSO will walk with you anywhere within the campus limits if you feel unsafe (available 24 hours).
- Cable Service – UPD personnel can assist with jump starting a dead vehicle battery. They cannot assist with locked keys in vehicles, out of fuel, or flat tires.
- Lost and found – many items lost on campus end up being
- Bicycle Registration – UPD can document and photograph your bicycle information for you. In the event that your bicycle ever goes missing (even off campus), UPD can provide you with the information for your bike so an appropriate report can be made.
- RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) – UPD holds a three-day self-defense course at least once a year. This class is free of charge and co-sponsored by the SRC. Advertising can be found on posters around campus, on the UPD Facebook and Instagram beginning one month prior to the class.
Parking Tips from UPD:
During the first couple weeks of the new semester, traffic and parking will be heavy. It’s important to allow extra time to find parking and make your way around campus. Parking Lots H & I, located on the southern end of campus, are typically the easiest to find parking in.
Here are a few other suggestions:
- Parking permits are required year-round at all times. There is no “grace period” for having a permit in your vehicle, unless otherwise specified for an event.
- Park legally only in one stall. Do not park in reserved or special business.
- If parking citation is received, you have 30 days to pay or contest, otherwise fees increase.
Parking citations are reported to DMV and unpaid cites can result in suspension of vehicle registration. Information to contest citations can be found on the back of the parking ticket.
