Students studying at California State University, Bakersfield to become educators will be able to get a financial boost from a new scholarship that will become available later this year.
The Kiwanis Club of the Golden Empire has donated $57,000 to the university to establish an endowment that will provide financial assistance to students interested in a career involving child education. Two students will each be eligible for $1,000 scholarships starting in the 2024-25 academic year.
“We wanted to make a donation to an organization in our community which would have a lasting impact on the children in Kern County,” said Randy Richardson, president of the Foundation for The Kiwanis Club of the Golden Empire. “An endowed CSUB scholarship fit that bill. We wish all students the best in their educational pursuits.”
Club President Frank Abbott said the donation was made possible because of people who have participated in their fundraisers and that “without their support, we would not have been able to do this.”
Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. James Rodriguez spoke about CSUB at a recent Kiwanis meeting. He believes the donation will provide much-needed assistance to students.
“This will enable CSUB to further its mission in preparing future teachers, school counselors, and educational leaders,” Dr. Rodriguez said.
The new scholarships will be open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Recipients must be able to demonstrate financial need and have a 3.0 grade-point average or higher.
They must also be enrolled in the School of Social Sciences and Education with a preference in the fields of educational counseling, teacher education, special education, mathematics education, social work with an emphasis on children and adolescents or child, adolescent and family studies.
Judge Michael Bush, a member of the Kiwanis Club, said many club members — as well as their spouses and children — have attended CSUB over the years and that the donation is a great way for them to give back to their alma mater.
“We are grateful we can help students continue their education at CSUB, a true jewel of this community,” he said.
