With the start of the computer science degree program at California State University, Bakersfield’s Antelope Valley campus, the College of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering would like to introduce Dr. Yasser Youssef.
Dr. Youssef joins the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as an assistant professor working primarily on the CSUB-AV campus. He is excited to join the university, saying he felt “a very positive and welcoming environment” right from his first interview.
“The culture at CSUB — especially the collaboration and mutual respect I observed — stood out to me as both healthy and highly productive,” Dr. Youssef said. “It’s clear that faculty here care deeply about their students and each other, which aligns closely with my own values and teaching philosophy.”
Originally from Cairo, Egypt, Dr. Youssef earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer engineering from the Military Technical College in Cairo before going on to earn his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Cairo University.
After initially working as a biomedical engineering software developer and database administrator, Dr. Youssef transitioned to academia, first working as a lecturer at the Giza Engineering Institute in 2012 and the College of Computing and Information Technology at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport in 2014, working his way from assistant professor to professor of artificial intelligence. More recently, Dr. Youssef taught as a lecturer in the University of Oklahoma’s School of Library and Information Studies.
Dr. Youssef’s research centers around computer science and data science, with a special focus on machine learning, medical image analysis and explainable AI.
“I’m passionate about building intelligent systems that help people, especially in healthcare, where AI can improve diagnostics and support clinical decision-making,” he said. “I’ve also worked on projects in natural language processing, robotics and big data applications. My goal has always been to bridge advanced research with real-world impact, particularly in areas like healthcare, agriculture and education.”
Now at CSUB, Dr. Youssef looks forward to continuing his research and expanding it into new realms, like autonomous underwater vehicles.
At the CSUB-AV campus, Dr. Youssef will teach computer architecture, programming languages and capstone projects courses. As a founding member of CSUB-AV’s computer science faculty, Dr. Youssef hopes to lead recruitment initiatives for the new program, support student engagement and collaborate with fellow instructors on robotics and AI teams.
“I’m excited to become an active contributor to CSUB’s mission and to support our students in becoming creative, ethical and technically strong professionals,” Dr. Youssef said. “I’m also looking forward to building bridges between academia and industry, and I welcome any opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within the CSUB community.”
Dr. Youssef has moved to Lancaster with his wife, with whom he shares three children. In his free time, Dr. Youssef enjoys long walks outdoors, reading and going to the gym.
