California State University, Bakersfield celebrated the accomplishments of recent and upcoming Black graduates as part of its annual Black Graduates Recognition Ceremony on Saturday.
Over 30 graduates from 2022 and spring 2023 were presented with a certificate and special stole at the ceremony, which also included several speeches from students, faculty and staff.
“The Black Graduates Recognition Ceremony is important due to the need of culturally celebrating the achievements of our students,” said Tamar Anthony, co-chair of CSUB’s Black Faculty and Staff Association. “Once upon a time we were not allowed to be educated, so this ceremony pays tribute to our ancestors and elders who sacrificed to ensure that future generations flourish. The BGRC encompasses our heritage, culture, accomplishments and the desire to unite and rejoice.”
The ceremony, which took place in the Icardo Center, was held in conjunction with CSUB’s Black Family Day Festival at the Student Union. The community event celebrated all Black graduates, including those from the Kern High School District and Bakersfield College.
