Earlier this month, 17 students from California State University, Bakersfield's engineering programs participated in the Order of the Engineer ceremony. This annual event gives students the opportunity to pledge their commitment to the ethical and fair practice of engineering.
Sponsored by Aera Energy as part of their ongoing commitment to STEM education, the ceremony was conducted by Brent Ilott, Vice President of Operations at Aera. Ilott is celebrating his 20th year as a member of the Order of the Engineer himself and shared with the students about his own experience working in engineering.
In this ceremony, students take the "Obligation of the Engineer" before putting their hand through a large ring to receive their own special ring, which they will wear on the fifth finger of their dominant hand. The oath goes as follows:
"I am an Engineer. In my profession I take deep pride. To it I owe solemn obligations. As an Engineer, I pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect; and to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of my profession, conscious always that my skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use of the Earth’s precious wealth. As an Engineer, I shall participate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given without reservation for the public good. In the performance of duty and in fidelity to my profession, I shall give my utmost."
Speaking to the students who would take the pledge, Ilott spoke of the significance of the ceremony and the ring that signifies their "desire to serve the public."
"It is our symbol — wear it for all to see," Ilott said. "It is a badge of recognition which will become known to all as the sign of a learned professional pledged to making the best use of earth's precious and limited resources."
Dr. Jane Dong, dean of CSUB’s School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering, wrapped up the event by congratulating the new inductees. She encouraged students to remember the calling their rings represent.
“We really appreciate Aera’s long-time sponsorship to the CSUB Order of Engineering Ceremony,” Dr. Dong said. “It touched my heart to see so many engineering graduates participating in the ceremony and taking the oath to uphold the standards and obligations of the engineering profession with Mr. Ilott, an engineer with substantial experience and a leader in the profession."
