The JSL is comprised of scholarly articles related to school leadership and promotes the development of knowledge from a cohort of paradigms in which academic inquiries are engaged.
As a primary journal of administrative leadership in schools, it disseminates a broad scope of scholarly articles that enrich the literature of teacher leadership, student learning, parent involvement, and community support.
“As a junior faculty, I am greatly appreciative of Dr. [JJ] Wang for considering and nominating me for the great and honorable opportunity to serve on the Editorial Board of JSL. I am grateful that I was selected to serve on the board of the JSL that will support the professional field and visibility of CSUB,” said Dr. Hur.
Dr. Hur was invited based on her specialty of research in early childhood education, early childhood special education, early literacy development, dual language instruction and in-service and pre-service training. She is also interested in the role caregivers play at home in supporting the learning and development of their children.
“Her professional services to the editorial board will not only benefit the professional community of educational leadership, but also increase CSUB profile for contributing a young scholar with the extensive expertise in the discipline. In return, it will give Dr. Hur a chance to expand her horizon through reviewing quality manuscripts and interacting with other scholars on the editorial board,” said Dr. Wang.
Members of the JSL are selected from scholars who carry a rigorous research agenda in their specialty area to conduct the manuscript review, set the journal priority for the broad community of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), and identify an outstanding reviewer awardee during the annual convention of UCEA.
The UCEA is an association committed to advancing the preparation and practice of educational leaders for school and children.
“Currently, I am using the head start family and child experiences survey data to conduct secondary data analyses for my research. I am exploring the cross-lagged effects of home language and English skills of dual language learners (DLLs) across three years and how the cross-lagged effects may differ based on children’s initial English skills,” said Dr. Hur.
Dr. Hur proposed a study to the Administrative for Children and Families (ACF), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services) using the head start family and child experiences survey data in March, but it wasn’t funded. However, she is considering submitting for another grant that will support her secondary data analysis research agenda.
“Because of Dr. Wang’s expertise and experience in secondary data analyses and statistics, I had consulted him to offer feedback and guidance in the ACF grant proposal. I hope to find another opportunity to work with him,” Dr. Hur added.
She received a professional development program grant from the Grants, Research and Sponsored Programs office to move forward with her primary research.
“For this study, I plan to conduct a single case research in which preschool teachers who work with DLLs will receive coaching on dialogic reading strategies. I hope findings from the study will offer the opportunity for me to design an extension study (group experimental design) and seek external research funding,” said Dr. Hur.
This is just the beginning for Dr. Hur as she is also in the process of working on other opportunities and programs for CAFS students, though not all of the details have been finalized just yet.
“In comparison to other CSUs, the CAFS Department at CSUB is considered rather small in terms of full-time faculty, however, the quality of scholarship that CAFS faculty produce is exceptional. This appointment is yet another recognition of the impressive contributions of CAFS faculty at CSUB,” said Dr. Elaine Correa, professor and chair for the CAFS Department. “I am so very proud of Dr. Hur with her appointment to the JSL editorial board.”
