Dr. Hanoz Santoke, who has been with CSUB since 2012, is doing research in the area of environmental chemistry, particularly the degradation of pharmaceuticals in water. An entry in our ongoing series on CSUB's cutting-edge research
More about Dr. Santoke's research:
"Residues of pharmaceutical compounds are commonly found in water, especially in agriculture-intensive areas like Kern County, so I look at how they can break down and be removed from drinking water. My student, Arsh Mundi, is currently researching tylosin tartrate, a common veterinary antibiotic.
What does this research look like in practice?
"Lots of lab work! My work is theoretical, so all samples are prepared in the lab using chemicals that are purchased. We radiate samples using a UV reactor and then analyze them with high performance liquid chromatography."
The real-world impacts of the research:
"The results of my research can be used to improve water treatment systems. I am interested in this work because water quality is an important issue in Kern County."
