Rachel Tate, 2019 Alumni Rising `Runner

She received a Master of Social Work from CSUB in 2011. As a long-term care ombudsman and social worker, Rachel serves some of the most vulnerable populations in her community including veterans, the homeless, correctional inmates at the end of life and people in long-term care who have no voice.

She is currently the regional director of the Pasadena office at WISE & Healthy Aging, overseeing one of five regional offices that collectively serve more than 76,000 residents in Los Angeles County.

She began her social work career in Los Angeles' Skid Row area with veterans, former inmates and those with a high-risk of contracting HIV. Rachel received national recognition for her advocacy work last year through the Howard Hinds Memorial Award, after being nominated by Dr. Laura Mosqueda, dean of the Keck School of Medicine at USC and co-director of the National Center on Elder Abuse.

In addition to her work, she serves as field supervisor to MSW students throughout the CSU system and as a guest speaker in the CSUB MSW program’s Social Work and Older Adults course.

Each year, CSUB's four academic schools choose "Rising Runners," university graduates of the last 10 years already making a mark in their careers. The Alumni Association invites them back to campus during Homecoming week to be honored and to share words of wisdom with current students.
