The School of Social Sciences and Education welcomes several new faculty members for the 2022-23 academic year. Read more about each of the new faculty below.
Dr. Hoban is joining CSUB after working the past two years as an assistant professor of social work at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Prior to that, she worked at University of California, Irvine as a sociology lecturer.
Dr. Hoban holds a Ph.D. in sociology from UC Irvine, a master’s in social work from the University of Chicago and bachelor’s degrees in psychology and peace and conflict studies from UC Berkeley.
Her research is primarily centered around the study of social movements. In one study, Dr. Hoban examined at how social movement organizations make decisions and how they grapple with the pros and cons of various decision-making practices. Another study investigated the ways that corporations responded on social media after the death of George Floyd.
“I am especially motivated to support my students as they learn about society and explore career pathways in human services and public policy,” she said. “I am passionate about making learning accessible to all students, including first-generation students, non-traditional students, students who balance schools with work and students who are parents.”
Dr. Lane has been in education for the past 18 years after starting her career as a secondary English teacher. She has worked as a school administrator for 10 of those years.
Now, she wants to have a larger impact on the state’s educational system through the teacher education program. Her main goal is to reduce educational inequities by impacting teacher practices.
“I like working at CSUB because the Teacher Education Department’s mission is in alignment with my mission as an educator,” Dr. Lane said. “Additionally, I am an alum — I recently completed the doctoral program in educational leadership. The professors in this program are fantastic, and I am proud to work alongside them!”
Dr. Li is joining CSUB after working for a year as an assistant professor of physical education and health education at Russell Sage College in Albany, New York.
She earned her Ph.D. and master’s degrees in kinesiology from Ohio State University. Originally from China, Dr. Li earned her bachelor’s in physical and health education from Beijing Sport University.
Dr. Li’s research interest focuses on physical education teacher education and physical activity and health promotion among diverse populations. She has lived in the Bay Area for a while and is excited to be back in California.
“I am excited to be a part of the CSUB community, where I seek to help students to thrive not only as students but also as professionals in the field. I look forward to productive collaboration with my colleagues,” Dr. Li said. “I was attracted to the idea of building out a physical education teacher education concentration in the kinesiology department and opening a new course in adapted physical education here at CSUB in the upcoming three years. I believe this move will greatly benefit the community, and I’d love to be part of it.”
Dr. Marks first joined CSUB as a lecturer in 2019 and became the director of the university’s teacher credentialing programs last year. This academic year, she has been promoted to the role of an assistant professor.
“I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to return this year as an assistant professor,” she said. “I am looking forward to growing professionally and continuing to serve and support the students here at California State University, Bakersfield.”
Dr. Marks received her Ph.D. in English education from Purdue University in 2013. She was previously a secondary English teacher in Illinois, Indiana and California prior to moving to the collegiate level.
The main focus of her work centers on advancing innovative ways to disrupt the status quo and create more equitable learning opportunities for underserved populations. Her research interests include evolving teacher education preparation practices, using literature as a means to support and enact social justice and exploring equitable structures within the classroom.
Dr. Mouanoutoua currently teaches courses for CSUB’s education specialist credential program and is the lead for the internship pathway. Prior to joining the university, he served at Chico State as an assistant professor and teacher credential program coordinator.
Dr. Mouanoutoua has been an education specialist for over 10 years and has served as a school administrator and a consultant for inner city schools. His research interests consist of identifying effective academic interventions in meeting the needs of struggling students.
“One reason why I decided to join CSUB is to have the opportunity to work with a more diverse community,” Dr. Mouanoutoua said. “I enjoy collaborating with other professionals from different backgrounds who contribute to a democratic society. Being a part of CSUB has been great so far, and I believe that I will be here for a very long time!”
