How I make a difference: Merry Coder
A Midwestern native, Merry Coder, the senior events specialist in the Office of Events within University Advancement, has been with CSUB for four years. "I love the supportive environment that we continually build for each other," Merry said of her UA colleagues. "I am thankful to be part of a team that makes giving back part of what we do each day!"
Merry serves as chair of the Literacy Project Committee with Junior League of Bakersfield:
"For the upcoming year, we are focusing on literacy as our primary mission within the community. Junior League of Bakersfield is committed to developing the potential of women and to improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers."
Why Merry got involved:
"The mission of Junior League of Bakersfield is close to me, as I believe women, when joined together, can be a powerful agent for positivity and change. The legacy of Junior League is well-established both in this area and all around the country. I was excited to join our local chapter and become part of their efforts to make Bakersfield an even better place to live. My grandmother, who is my role model, is also a Junior League member in my hometown. I always strive to follow in her footsteps."
Why it's important for Merry to give back to the community:
"Before settling in Bakersfield, my husband and I moved around quite a bit. It is always important to me to become integrated into the community and give back more than I take. Getting involved in volunteer organizations makes me feel like I am able to make a bigger difference than I could striking out on my own. I believe, like so many CSUB employees, that community service is vital and that we should all strive to make a positive impact wherever we can, however we are able. It is our responsibility to help build the Bakersfield we want to see in the future."

"When we become involved in volunteerism in the community, we further demonstrate our devotion to Bakersfield and its people. It’s a wonderful opportunity to make connections and represent the university in a positive light. The more we give back, the more we inspire others to do the same!" - CSUB staff member Merry Coder
