President Lynnette Zelezny and the California State University, Bakersfield cabinet sent the following message of solidarity to the campus community on March 17, in response to the increasing brutality against Asian-Americans and Pacific-Islanders.
Dear Campus Community,
As disturbing accounts of brutality against Asian-Americans and Pacific-Islanders increase, we ask for our university family to pause in solidarity with our own students, faculty and staff who might be feeling frightened or persecuted.
At CSUB, we have no tolerance for hate. Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is at the heart of everything we do, but that mission succeeds only when we acknowledge our common humanity and exercise respect for one another. CSUB will continue to put action behind our words, and do the meaningful work that brings us together.
On Thursday, Asian-American leaders and activists will testify before a United States House of Representatives panel on civil rights about the rise in discrimination and violence against their communities in the year since the coronavirus pandemic began. Let us hope that our leaders can move the conversation forward so that Asian-Americans can feel a measure of peace.
To our Asian-American students, faculty, staff: Your CSUB family stands with you. You are supported, you are valued and you are welcome.
