Dr. Adams’ new role represents a significant career transition for her. She has worked nearly 25 years at CSUN and said leaving the campus will be very bittersweet.
“I have mixed feelings about leaving,” she said. “I will miss the people at CSUN, but I’m also super excited about joining the CSUB team.”
In her current position at CSUN, Dr. Adams said she is mostly focused on issues involving curriculum and policy and hasn’t had many opportunities to interact directly with students, which she misses and hopes to rectify with her new position as dean of CSUB AV.
“Right now, we serve around 36,000 undergraduate students, but I’m only responsible for a few pieces of their experience,” she said. “CSUB AV has the whole package. This will be a chance for me to be part of students’ entire journey.”
A large reason why she will be able to interact with more students is due to the significantly smaller size of the student body at the Antelope Valley campus, which has around 600 students.
Once Dr. Adams assumes the dean position in August, one of her first priorities will be to meet with students, faculty and staff to identify what the needs are.
“They know a lot better than I do what needs to be done, what changes need to happen. I really want to start from the inside out and get a sense of what the dynamics are,” she said. “I also want to spend some time on the Bakersfield campus to get to know the departments so I can see how the AV campus can be further connected to the larger goals of CSUB.”
One of Dr. Adams’ main goals is to increase awareness of the campus, not only in the region but within the Lancaster community itself.
“I think the most important piece is that the campus isn’t as well-known in the community as it should be. There’s a sense that there are no four-year and graduate opportunities available, and that’s not true,” she said. “We need to figure out ways to be more prominent in a social, cultural and economic context so people know that it’s there and what a great opportunity it is.”
Dr. Adams hopes that expanding the number of courses and degree programs being offered will draw more people to CSUB AV and help the campus grow.
“It definitely has the capacity to do more. There are great opportunities for growth and change,” she said.
