Today California State University, Bakersfield President Lynnette Zelezny shared the following message with students, in response to an announcement that the CSU will not raise tuition for the 2021-22 academic year.
"I am pleased to share with you some optimistic news from California State University Chancellor Joseph I. Castro. The CSU will not increase tuition for the 2021-2022 academic year.
At the CSU Board of Trustees meeting today, Chancellor Castro acknowledged the steep hurdles faced by each and every one of the CSU’s students during this year of sacrifice, loss and hardship.
You have chosen to continue your education and stand with the CSU. The CSU, in turn, will stand with you.
The chancellor also indicated that projections for state and federal support are promising, and he does not foresee a systemwide furlough program for CSU employees at this time.
Additional good news: CSUB students will receive funding from the federal government, similar to the CARES Act assistance that was distributed last spring. The university is currently working out the details of the new distribution. I know this is exciting and that you have many questions about the aid, but we are awaiting further guidance from the federal government and the CSU. Details about the support will be distributed in coming weeks. Please watch for more information on the distribution program – including award amounts, timing and more - in coming days.
’Runners, we have been through so much together over the past year. Your dedication and resilience is inspiring to behold. We stand in awe of your spirit – the spirit that will carry you through this pandemic and on to any future that you see before you.
Let us celebrate this good news and see it for what it is: An expression by Chancellor Castro that your commitment matters and that you matter."
