California State University, Bakersfield is celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8 with several virtual sessions.
CSUB’s Organization of Women Leaders is presenting six 40-minute Zoom sessions across two time blocks in recognition of a global day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is held in conjunction with Women’s History Month.
“This is a great opportunity to not only bring the campus community together but also to get members of campus out of their area and meet new people,” said Kristen Valdez, chair of the organization. “We’re all coming together and doing something new, learning something new. It’s just a way to have fun. It’s a good break from the monotony of your day.”
The event will kick off at 11 a.m. on March 8 with an introduction from President Lynnette Zelezny, who will speak about the importance of International Women’s Day.
From 11:15-11:55 a.m., attendees can participate in sessions about meditation, food preservation and how to complete formal paperwork for a business. During the second time block from 12:05-12:45 p.m., sessions will be offered on theatre games, painting and chair yoga. Sessions are open to all CSUB students, faculty and staff.
Supplies are recommended for two of the sessions. Materials for the food preservation session can be found here while materials for the painting session can be found here.
Besides the painting session, which is led by a student, all sessions will be led by CSUB faculty and staff.
“We have such a wide variety of talent on this campus,” Valdez said. “It’s such a great opportunity to leverage that and showcase those people who are so talented on our campus.”
Registration for the event is recommended and can be completed by filling out an online form. Individuals may register for more than one session as long as they are in different time blocks.
The Organization of Women Leaders is an affinity group on campus whose mission is to foster the development of women. For more information about the organization and the International Women’s Day event, visit their CSUB webpage.
