California State University, Bakersfield kinesiology professors won’t be gossiping about the technical flaws in players’ golf swings at the university's first Golf Classic on March 31 at The Links at Riverlakes Ranch.
Instead, they’ll be there to cheer players on as they link up a day of fun with the chance to help CSUB students graduate and begin their careers, as money raised from the event will fund academic scholarships.
“This is an opportunity to engage with the community in a fun way,” said Dr. Brian Street, associate professor and chair of the Kinesiology Department. “We want to share some of the things that we do as a department and also provide an opportunity to raise funds to support our students.”
The Kinesiology Department is holding the Golf Glassic in partnership with Staff Forum. The tournament will include several competitions, such as closest to the hole, longest drive and a 50/50 putting contest.
Prizes will be given to the top three teams. All participants will receive a free breakfast and lunch, as well as a goodie bag to take home.
Dr. Street said faculty from the Kinesiology Department, as well as students, will be at the event to talk with participants and provide assistance if needed.
CSUB has held golf tournaments in the past, but the COVID-19 pandemic ended those traditions. This new tournament format moves the event from Kernville to Bakersfield and raises money that will be used only to benefit students.
“We wanted to make it easier for people to be involved and for funds to go directly to students,” Dr. Street said.
There isn’t a specific fundraising goal for the Golf Classic, since this is something new and separate from what has been done in the past.
“Our goal is to successfully establish this event,” he said. “This is something we want to grow and build on year after year. The goal, ultimately, is for it to become a premiere event in Bakersfield.”
Dr. Street hopes the Golf Classic will help strengthen CSUB’s relationship with the community and facilitate a stronger awareness of what the university offers.
“What it really comes down to is how can we connect with the community so they can learn about what we’re doing?” he said. “I want people to appreciate what CSUB is doing and, specifically, what the Kinesiology Department is doing.”
The Golf Classic costs $175 per person, but several sponsorship levels are also available. Those interested in participating in the tournament can register here by March 15.
