California State University, Bakersfield Associate Professor of Accounting Dr. Di Wu has been selected by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) as the sole recipient of its 2022 Exemplary Global Board Member Award.
IMA is a global accounting association representing 140,000 members spanning more than 100 countries. Its Global Board consists of 36 voting directors from all over the world. According to the association's official website, “this award recognizes a member of the IMA Global Board who, consistent with IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values, exemplifies through preparation, participation, and service what a Board member should be and do. This individual serves as an example for all IMA Board members and sets a standard for superior performance.”
“This prestigious award, presented to only one of three dozen global voting directors annually, reflects Dr. Wu’s global mindset, sharp strategic mind and ambassadorship for the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) program on campus and around the world," said IMA President and CEO Jeffrey C. Thomson. "Dr. Wu stands out for his compassion, friendly style, intellectual curiosity and inquisitiveness in dealing with peers and students alike. Dr. Wu’s passion for the profession is palpable!”
“We are very proud of Dr. Wu receiving this prestigious award. His commitment to the success of our students is commendable. We congratulate him on this most deserving accomplishment.” said Dr. John Stark, interim dean of the School of Business and Public Administration.
This is not the first time that Dr. Wu has been recognized by the IMA. He was the recipient of the R. Lee Brummet Distinguished Award for Educators in 2019.
Dr. Wu is licensed as a certified public accountant and management accountant. He also serves on the IMA Committee on Ethics as board liaison, on the association's Committee on Academic Relations as a member and as co-chair Outreach Working Group of the IMA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Global Advisory Committee.
One person who has served with Dr. Wu on the IMA Global Board is Rich Brady, chair-elect of the board and CEO of American Society of Military Comptrollers in Washington, D.C.
"From the start, Professor Wu stood out as an exemplary board leader. He expertly advised the board and IMA staff on a broad range of topics, including the needs of the academic and student communities and the expansion of the CMA program globally," he said. “Most important, Professor Wu displayed exceptional executive temperament, forging relationships throughout the board and across stakeholder and partner groups that advanced the interests of the IMA in being the leading association for finance and accounting professionals in business. I am extremely pleased to see that Professor Wu was awarded the IMA Exemplary Board Member of the Year Award. There is no board member more deserving of this award as we are all very proud of his accomplishments.”
CSUB is the fifth campus in the CSU system to have an IMA student chapter on campus. Nearly 30 CSUB accounting students have been awarded CMA program scholarships by the association.
CSUB alumna Kathleen Valenzuela, who currently works as large enterprise product manager at Trintech, first met Dr. Wu when she was finishing up her master's degree in accounting and said he had a major impact on her and other students.
"Immediately, he became very active on campus in mentoring accounting students and educating them about the opportunities an accounting degree would open up for them," she said.
After talking with Dr. Wu about opportunities in management accounting and learning more about IMA and the CMA program, she helped in starting CSUB's IMA chapter in 2019 and served as the founding president.
"Without Dr. Wu’s mentorship and guidance in that process, as well as developing the student membership in that chapter, it wouldn’t be the success it is today," she said. "There really is no one more deserving of the IMA Exemplary Global Board Member Award.”
Dr. Wu isn't the only person from CSUB to earn recognition from the IMA. CSUB accounting students have gone on to place in the final four teams of the association's National Student Case Competition that made CSUB the first among West Coast universities receiving this award.
In 2021, accounting student John Velazquez was announced the recipient of the national IMA Stuart Cameron and Margaret McLeod Memorial Scholarship.
