California State University, Bakersfield is being recognized for its efforts to help Hispanic students achieve academic success.
The university made Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine’s 2022 Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics rankings. CSUB ranked No. 49 in the Total Bachelor’s Degrees Granted category, No. 89 for Total Master’s Degrees Granted and No. 80 in Total Enrollment for 4-Year Schools.
These rankings are based on data from the 2020-21 academic year. Despite the impact of COVID-19 during that year, CSUB managed to improve in all three categories compared to the 2021 list.
The goal of the rankings, published in Hispanic Outlook’s October issue, is to chart the progress of Hispanic students in higher education and highlight institutions that are committed to serving their educational needs.
“The institutions listed here deserve to be recognized and honored for continuing to serve the largest numbers of Hispanics/Latinos, despite the setbacks and challenges they faced over the past years,” Hispanic Outlook said on its website. “They have had to make good use of their resources, redefine their modes of educational delivery, and think of innovative ways to support their students, especially the most vulnerable ones, in order to weather the storm in the best way possible.”
The lists are compiled from the U.S. Department of Education’s database of higher education surveys from all 50 states, according to the magazine. Colleges and universities are ranked based on several factors, including enrollment and graduation rates.
CSUB is federally designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), as Hispanic students make up more than 25% of full-time equivalent undergraduates. Currently, over 60% of undergraduates at the university identify as Hispanic or Latinx.
The Hispanic Outlook rankings are just the latest CSUB has received this year. The university was ranked No. 29 in the Top Public Schools category and No. 18 in Top Performers on Social Mobility among western universities by the U.S. News and World Report.
CSUB was also recently ranked No. 13 in the Best Bang for the Buck: West list and No. 26 in the Master’s Universities list by Washington Monthly.
