The Inaugural Southern San Joaquin Valley Research Forum recently took place on Monday, May 18. California State University, Bakersfield student, Jennifer Ballard, presented and took second place in the competition.
"Participating in the Kern Medical Research Forum as an undergraduate was an honoring and humbling experience. As one of the oral presenter finalists, I was able to present on how spatiotemporal gait asymmetries can distinguish whether a below-knee amputee is a faller or non-faller,” said Ballard, kinesiology major.
Dr. Brian Street, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and research mentor to Ballard, said she “has been a research assistant in my lab for over a year and was a Student Research Scholarship recipient this last dall. I am very proud of Jennifer's hard work and dedication in my lab, and her selection as an Excellence in Research Oral Presenter at the forum is testament to her efforts.”
“The San Joaquin Valley Research Forum is an exciting research opportunity to disseminate important research, especially for the San Joaquin region,” Dr. Street added.
This research symposium is not only a place to showcase the research of Kern Medical and CSUB, but it’s an important venue to spark and inspire collaborations between the two institutions.
“The opportunity to showcase our study was possible with the contribution and support of my mentor Dr. Brian Street as well as my fellow research assistants, Micheal Canals and Jorge Cejas. Although data collection has been put on a hold, I'm grateful for the work that lead to the presentation and look forward to continuing research in the fall 2020 semester when possible,” Ballard said.
