California State University, Bakersfield has been selected by the Office of the Governor as a partner campus for the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps program, a visionary new initiative that will help students pay for college in exchange for service to our communities.
“California is a world leader in both higher education and service,” said Governor Gavin Newsom at a press conference announcing the initiative Tuesday. “The #CaliforniansForAll College Corps advances these priorities by connecting Californians of different backgrounds with enriching service opportunities throughout the state while making college more affordable for our state’s future leaders. We hope the Corps will be replicated across the nation.”
CSUB is one of 45 colleges and universities selected to participate in the program, which harnesses the energy and talent of students to move our communities forward in a number of areas, including recovery from COVID, climate change, education and food insecurity.
Students will learn leadership skills and civic engagement strategies while earning financial support and college credit, and local communities will benefit from this unprecedented focus on service.
"The #CaliforniansForAll College Corps is a wonderful opportunity to exercise one of our guiding principles at CSUB: Supporting our students and communities as we work together to build the foundation for progress through the life-enriching act of service to others,” said CSUB President Lynnette Zelezny.
Sixteen of the 23 CSU campuses were selected to participate in the competitive process.
“The California State University is honored to take part in the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps,” said California State University Chancellor Joseph Castro during the media event, streamed on Facebook. “I’m excited to see how our undergraduate student fellows will serve the social and civic health of the state while also earning funds for college.”
CSUB will launch the two-year program in the fall of 2022 with an initial cohort of 100 students, adding another 100 `Runners in the fall of 2023. Each student will earn $10,000 to help pay for their education.
Campus leaders will begin planning the implementation of the CSUB #CaliforniansForAll College Corps program in the coming weeks. More information, including how to apply, will be shared at a later date.
#CaliforniansForAll College Corps is part of the Californian Volunteers program, the state office tasked with engaging Californians in service, volunteerism, and civic action to tackle pressing challenges. The 2021-22 Governor’s California Comeback Plan included $146 million for the Corps, in partnership with CSU, UC, community college and private university systems in California.
All participating Corps partners were selected for the program after demonstrating:
- A commitment from top leadership to prioritize the Corps as a campus-wide initiative.
- A strategy to collaborate with other participating campuses in the region.
- A thoughtful plan to link the service experience to academic outcomes, ensuring on-time degree completion.
- A compelling recruitment strategy with a particular focus on low-income students and Dreamers.
