Select theatre students at California State University, Bakersfield will participate in the Irene Ryan Acting Competition as part of The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, which is virtual this year.
“The Kennedy Center American College Theatre allows students a chance to explore their interests on a deeper level. Along with the Irene Ryan Acting Competition, our students can participate in workshops this year,” said CSUB Theatre Department faculty member, Mendy McMcasters.
The following students were selected to participate after being recognized for an outstanding performance in a CSUB theatre production for “The Who’s Tommy:”
- Yasmin Angela Marcelo;
- Jan Mateo Tugab;
- Divyang Motavar;
- Abigail Duncan; and
- Natalie Love
The Region 8 Festival is a four-day event (February 10-13) and will feature invited productions and workshops involving all things theatre, the Irene Ryan Competition and more.
“CSUB Theatre majors and minors are ready to take the next step in their careers by exposing themselves to the wider theatre community and their participation in the American College Theatre Festival is a great start,” McMasters added.
It is a place where students and faculty can come together from Arizona, Central and Southern California, Hawaii, Southern Nevada, Utah and Guam to witness each other’s works and collaborate, as well as activities in workshops, including topics on playwrights, auditioning, theater for children, scene painting and more.
This year’s workshop titles are: Arts Leadership, Dramatizing Stories of Homelessness and Survival, Diversifying Approaches to Acting, Techniques for Costume Rendering, Lighting Nonwhite Skin and Inclusion in Theatre.
The Irene Ryan Scholarships will provide recognition, honor and financial assistance to outstanding performers wishing to further their education.
The students prepared two contrasting monologues, which were recorded and sent into the festival last month.
