Washington Monthly magazine has recognized California State University, Bakersfield for its affordability and the quality of its master’s programs.
As part of its 2024 College Guide, CSUB was ranked No. 14 in the Best Bang for the Buck: West list and No. 28 in the Master’s University list. CSUB was of only nine CSUs to make the top 30.
“There is a palpable sense of pride at CSUB, and in the communities we serve, that this university is nationally recognized for the exceptional quality of our academic programs and the affordability of a life-changing college degree,” said Interim President Vernon B. Harper Jr. “This year, we are launching an unprecedented outreach to local K-12 students and their families to help them work toward their future at CSUB, Kern County’s university. High rankings help us make the case that students don’t have to leave home to get a first-class education.”
The Best Bang for the Buck ranking is based on how well colleges help students attain degrees at affordable prices. It is created by isolating social mobility metrics from the main rankings of four-year institutions, according to Washington Monthly.
The Master’s Universities list features four-year institutions that award a significant number of master’s degrees but few or no doctoral degrees. The rankings are determined based on a university’s contributions in three categories: social mobility, research and promoting public service.
Washington Monthly is a nonprofit magazine that, in addition to covers U.S. politics and government in addition to higher education.
