The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has awarded a 2021-22 Superior Merit Award to the California State University, Bakersfield student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its members.
The SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award program encourages the development of more effective student chapters and distinguishes outstanding activities and projects. Chapters are recognized based on operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession, and SHRM engagement.
“The members of our SHRM student chapters represent the next generation of HR leaders, and it’s critical to highlight the instrumental role they play in SHRM’s success,” said SHRM President and CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. “The hard work of CSUB SHRM shows the future of the profession is, indeed, in good hands. I applaud their accomplishments and ability to foster innovative programming, development and interest in HR as we navigate changing workplaces.”
SHRM student chapters have the opportunity to earn an award based on the number of activities they complete during the merit award cycle, the most recent one of which lasted from May 1, 2021, to April 30, 2022.
“This award speaks volumes about the value our chapter adds to students’ educational experience," said Dr. J.T. Chen, co-advisor for CSUB SHRM and assistant professor of management and marketing. "This is the sixth year in a row that CSUB has received this honor, and we are committed to continue this legacy."
During the 2021-22 academic year, CSUB SHRM provided organizational management through consistent monthly meetings, effective leadership, seminars, internship and volunteering opportunities as well as mentoring for the student members.
They also implemented a community support project that promotes public policy advocacy, promoted the SHRM Student-to-Professional Membership Program to graduating members and encouraged preparation for the SHRM Certified Professional exam.
Members also participated in the Kern County SHRM Symposium, which was created to promote human resource management knowledge, organize students who have similar interests, maximize student involvement and enhance their professional abilities.
