Dear Campus Community,
I am pleased to announce that after a national search, Dr. Kristen Beall Watson has been appointed California State University, Bakersfield’s new Chief of Staff to the President, effective Aug. 2, 2021.
Dr. Watson, a first-generation college graduate, earned her bachelor’s degree in business from California Polytechnic University (Cal Poly) San Luis Obispo and obtained a CPA certification. She also earned a doctorate in education from the University of California, Los Angeles.
As the president and CEO for the Kern Community Foundation, she has extensive experience in government relations and has been an instrumental leader in launching the Kern Education Pledge and A Better Bakersfield and Boundless Kern (B3K) initiative that are aligned with CSUB’s strategic plan. In addition, she has experience in education with the Kern High School District, the Grimm Family Education Foundation and the Paramount Academy (Wonderful College Prep Academy).
Dr. Watson is thrilled and energized to join the CSUB family.
“As a long-time Kern County resident, I am passionate about improving regional educational outcomes and know that my new colleagues at CSU Bakersfield undoubtedly share the same commitment. I look forward to supporting President Zelezny while working with faculty and staff to ensure that all students have the opportunity to learn, dream and thrive.”
She replaces Michael Lukens, who returned to Fresno State to join family and serve as the executive director of government relations.
Please join me in warmly welcoming Dr. Watson to CSUB to serve in this high-profile cabinet position.
