Six California State University, Bakersfield accounting students were chosen to receive a 2022-23 California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA) scholarship presented by the Bakersfield chapter.
The students were recognized during a reception held in September at the Stockdale Country Club. A total of $13,000 in scholarships were provided to the students.
The CalCPA scholarship is annually awarded to full-time students that carry a strong GPA, are involved in the community and exemplify an interest in pursuing professional careers in the accounting field.
“As CalCPA, we strive to support young generation accountants as well as accounting programs in the region," said CalCPA Bakersfield Chapter President Valerie Adams. "Our chapter board and committee were very impressed with these scholarship recipients. We sincerely look forward to collaborating with the accounting program at CSUB to support the future of the accounting profession.”
The CSUB students honored were Matt Burdick, Kelli French, Maria Herrera, John Najera, Dawn Sanders and Rebekah Voshall.
“I appreciate my community, accounting professionals, my mentor and the accounting faculty at CSUB for supporting my journey to becoming a future CPA. Thank you to CalCPA for allowing me this honor,” French said.
The evening reception included a panel discussion of recent graduates sharing their career path in public accounting, including the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. Social opportunities and resources in the community were also presented.
CSUB accounting faculty, along with the Interim Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration Dr. Seung Bach, were in attendance to support the honored recipients.
"We are very proud of our students who are the future leaders of this profession," said Dr. Di Wu, department chair of the CSUB Accounting and Finance Department. "I cannot thank you enough to the CalCPA Bakersfield Chapter and the local professionals for their support of our accounting students and program."
