How I make a difference: Kristina Saldana
Lifelong theatre enthusiast Kristina Saldana feels at home in her position as administrative coordinator of the Music and Theatre Department, where she loves being "surrounded by intelligent and artistic people, both students and co-workers, who are working toward creating a better future in higher education and the arts."
Saldana volunteers with The Empty Space, a Bakersfield community theatre and art gallery. "The Empty Space’s mission is to provide professional- quality live theatre to the community of Bakersfield and to create an opportunity for local actors, directors and technicians to work in a creative environment that allows them to express themselves and their artistic ideas while encouraging them to continue to study and improve their craft."
Why Saldana got involved with The Empty Space:
"I became involved in 2007 because theatre was an important part of my high school experience. When I graduated, many of my friends and teachers were involved locally, and I wanted to continue producing theatre. The Empty Space's mission was important but also the atmosphere of the theatre was so welcoming, and the people involved in running the organization were all volunteer, meaning everyone was there for their passion."
Why it's important for Saldana to give back to the community:
"Careers within the arts are scarce but people need outlets and hobbies that allow them to express themselves and feel important within a community. The Empty Space takes pride in being able to provide those opportunities to anyone who wants a place to artistically learn and grow."
Why it's important for CSUB to serve its communities:
"Not only with theatre and the arts majors, but many of CSUB students also graduate and are hit hard with the uncertainty of the future. By serving its community and giving back, they are creating valuable relationships with local nonprofits and business and exposing an unlimited number of opportunities for students to find fulfilling careers and avocations."
