Last summer, Odle interned at Northrop Grumman as a systems engineering intern and has since been offered a full-time position as a reliability engineer once he gets his degree. In both jobs, Odle has worked in a lab similar to the Fab Lab. His job involves opening electronics to assess their component parts.
Working for Northrop Grumman has been a dream of Odle’s since he was 19, and he nearly quit school to take a job there a couple years ago. Now that he’s about to officially join their team, he’s glad he stuck with his education.
“Prior to CSUB, I would be able to do the job I have at Northrop now; however, with CSUB, I’m able to understand it a lot further,” he said. “I didn’t know the theory behind any of it. I was just like, ‘Oh, this is broken.’ But CSUB made me think more like an engineer, made me understand the theories and made me have much better critical thinking.”
Odle thinks his experience working in the Fab Lab made his resume stand out when he was chosen for the internship, but the hours of tinkering there gave him more than that.
“The Fab Lab gave me the confidence to pursue my ideas,” he said. “It gave me the confidence of seeing my ideas come to fruition.”
With a job lined up for after graduation, Odle is ahead of the game but already thinking about what’s next.
“It feels amazing to be almost done, but I’m very goal-driven, so I’m already looking at a bunch of master’s programs,” he said. “I know my education is not going to stop with CSUB, but it does feel great to check that box of getting my undergrad done.”
To celebrate the milestone, Odle will walk in commencement later this month. His mom and other family will be traveling to attend, some making the drive south from the Bay Area and others flying all the way from Peru.
